The reason we chose the name Telportafilter was not just because we wanted to play with words, but also to differentiate the product from a regular drip coffee bag.

What is drip coffee in general?

Drip coffee is a very prevalent, and a very user-friendly way to consume coffee without any equipment whatsoever, you only need a mug and hot water. Drip coffee is usually mass-produced in a factory-level environment with industrial gear not specifically designed for specialty coffee. Quick, easy, but at the end of the day not a cafe-level experience. Nonetheless, it is still tasty, we all enjoy and like it, it’s just a different niche.

How is Teleportafilter different then?

Imagine if we took a completely different approach, and tried to make the drips similar to cafe quality!

Grinding

What if we ground the coffee the same way the best cafes all around the world would do? Even if using the same beans or even the same grind size, different grinders will still produce different flavour. Currently, the semi-official King of all grinders for filter coffee is the Mahlkönig EK43. So what if we used this one instead of an industrial grinder that is probably the same as used for the infamous supermarket coffees?

Flavour-preservation

Oxidation is our mortal enemy. It slowly drains the life out of our beans or grinds and leaves nothing, but stale emptiness. How to protect our precious grinds from it then? The regular drip coffee process often contains a Nitrogen-flush step, where Nitrogen gas flushes the air out of the pouch together with the evil Oxygen, thus extending the flavours for a longer time. However, that would probably work for whole beans, but it won’t be enough for their ground form. Why? Because some air will still be stuck between the grounds. What’s the solution then? Compared to industrial practice, we thoroughly vacuum the pouches, and only then perform the Nitrogen flush, which we do for extended volume, meaning that even if some lucky air could still be hiding undetected, the higher pressure and higher volume of Nitrogen would eventually sweep it out. This way our pouches may be chonkier, but their content will taste fresh even after a longer period of time.

Obviously, this process is extremely labour intensive, but as long as the work we put into the product can be transferred into the taste within the cup, then it is absolutely worth the effort!

Flow rate

Extraction is influenced by various factors, and one of them is the time the coffee particles are in touch with water. This is why we decided to increase our dose by 20% from 10g to 12g, which would mean a more optimal flow-resistance for light roast coffee, which will also result in improved, more balanced flavour profile.

Health & environmental concerns

When we started to assemble our production line and contacted some suppliers, we realized only a very few adhere to the European Union’s health standards, and we were also concerned about the waste generated of a single-use product. Therefore, we chose only suppliers who could prove that everything that gets into contact with food is safe as per EU health standards, and everything can be as environmental friendly as possible. Meaning filters are biodegradable, while the vacuum pouches and boxes are recyclable.

Truly Specialty

Nowadays companies know the charm of specialty coffee, and will try to ride the tide. The most common trick is to write the origin country of the beans on the bag, like Columbia or Ethiopia, which creates an impression that people might drink specialty coffee. However, this only means that the beans were sourced from those particular countries. They can be obtained cheaper, they can be roasted with less care, and they are most suitable for a large-scale everyday use. But still, not specialty.

Single Origin Specialty Coffee has certain criteria to qualify as such, and they are more of a rarity in the drip coffee business than the default.

Our goal is different, it is to eventually to cooperate with many truly specialty roasters, and whenever they have something good to offer, we will try to make it available. We will include as much info about the beans as possible, and you can have a wine-tasting style moment with coffee anytime and anywhere, and the only thing you need are those small yet fat pouches.

TLDR

As you can see, there are several reasons we decided to differentiate our product from the regular drip coffee bags, and we decided to focus more on the individual tasting experience than on mass-manufacturing, and every aspect of our product will reflect this approach. We really hope you can taste the difference too, and enjoy the hard work that goes a long way from the farmers, through the roasters to you, who finally prepares your cup filled with delicious black gold.
